 The Role


The Unit Head leads the Instruction and Scholarly Communications at the National Medical Library to support students, faculty and staff of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS), UAE University. This leadership position will provide information literacy programming for students, faculty and associated researchers as well as direct support in the use and application of academic information resources and support tools, specifically in the medical and health sciences.


Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the Unit Head of Instruction and Scholarly Communications will design, plan and deliver information literacy sessions and workshops to medical students, post graduates and faculty including individuals, small groups, and classroom settings. Furthermore, the ideal candidate will be able to create online and printed guides to promote medical information resources and point of care tool to the CMHS community.

Required skills and competencies

  • Progressive record of leadership and effective engagement with faculty.
  • Substantial knowledge of the historical and current trends and practices in scholarly publishing.
  • Management and budgetary experience.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively mentor library professionals and staff, and facilitate the work of others.
  • Understanding of digital technologies and their application in service to patrons.
  • A record of professional contributions.


Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from ALA (American Library Association) accredited program or its international equivalent; an advanced degree in another subject discipline is highly desirable.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in an academic or research library with responsibilities in the areas of collection development, research support or senior library management.
  • Experience with copyright and intellectual rights management, and a thorough understanding of academic publishing issues and trends in scholarly communication.
